The wrenches used to tighten high-strength bolts in bridge construction are no ordinary household wrenches. They require high precision and high torque to ensure that the high-strength bolts achieve the desired, precise preload, thus ensuring safe and reliable steel structure connections.

High-strength bolt connections (such as those with grades 8.8 and 10.9) are based on a "friction-type" principle: the bolts apply a significant preload, clamping the connected steel plates. The load is transmitted through friction between the contacting steel plates. Insufficient preload can lead to slippage and failure; excessive preload can damage the bolts or the steel plates.

Therefore, tightening tools must meet the following requirements:

High precision: Precisely control the applied force with a narrow tolerance.

High torque: Capable of generating thousands or even tens of thousands of Newton-meters (N·m).

Data logging: Modern construction requires data recording of key nodes for quality traceability.

Hanpu wrenches indirectly control the bolt's "preload" by controlling the "torque" applied during tightening. Based on the "torque-preload" relationship (T=Kfd), applying a specific torque will produce a roughly corresponding preload, given the bolt and lubrication conditions.

Hanpu wrenches are categorized into electric torque wrenches, manual torque wrenches, and shear-type electric wrenches. Each type has distinct characteristics and applications. In bridge construction, tightening high-strength bolts typically follows a strict process, with different tools used at different stages:

Initial tightening: Initially tighten the bolts using a standard impact wrench or manual wrench to ensure a tight fit between the connecting plates. Precision requirements are not high at this stage. (Hanpu has developed specialized tightening wrenches specifically for initial tightening of various bolts.)

Re-tightening: Further tightening is achieved based on the initial tightening.

Final tightening: This is the most critical step, requiring the use of a properly calibrated precision torque wrench (electric or hydraulic) or shear-type electric wrench to achieve the designed preload.
